چکیده
Given n subspaces of a finite-dimensional vector space over a fixed finite field F, we wish to find a linear layout V1, V2, . . . , Vn of the subspaces such that dim((V1+V2+· · ·+Vi)∩(Vi+1+· · ·+Vn)) ≤ k for all i; such a linear layout is said to have width at most k. When restricted to 1-dimensional subspaces, this problem is equivalent to computing the path-width of an F-represented matroid in matroid theory and computing the trellis-width (or minimum trellis state-complexity) of a linear code in coding theory. We present a fixed-parameter tractable algorithm to construct a linear layout of width at most k, if it exists, for input subspaces of a finite-dimensional vector space over F. As corollaries, we obtain a fixedparameter tractable algorithm to produce a path-decomposition of width at most k for an input F-represented matroid of path-width at most k, and a fixed-parameter tractable algorithm to find a linear rankdecomposition of width at most k for an input graph of linear rankwidth at most k. In both corollaries, no such algorithms were known previously. Our approach is based on dynamic programming combined with the idea developed by Bodlaender and Kloks (1996) for their work on path-width and tree-width of graphs. It was previously known that a fixed-parameter tractable algorithm exists for the decision version of the problem for matroid path-width; a theorem by Geelen, Gerards, and Whittle (2002) implies that for each fixed finite field F, there are finitely many forbidden F-representable minors for the class of matroids of path-width at most k. An algorithm by Hliněný (2006) can detect a minor in an input F-represented matroid of bounded branch-width. However, this indirect approach would not produce an actual path-decomposition even if the complete list of forbidden minors were known. Our algorithm is the first one to construct such a path-decomposition and does not depend on the finiteness of forbidden minors.

On the computational complexity of finding a minimal basis for the guess and determine attack
Guess-and-determine attack is one of the general attacks on stream ciphers. It is a common cryptanalysis tool for evaluating security of stream ciphers. The effectiveness of this attack is based on the number of unknown bits which will be guessed by the attacker to break the cryptosystem. In this work, we present a relation between the minimum numbers of the guessed bits and uniquely restricted...
متن کاملThe "Art of Trellis Decoding" Is NP-Hard
Given a linear code C, the fundamental problem of trellis decoding is to find a coordinate permutation of C that yields a code C ′ whose minimal trellis has the least state-complexity among all codes obtainable by permuting the coordinates of C. By reducing from the problem of computing the pathwidth of a graph, we show that the problem of finding such a coordinate permutation is NP-hard, thus ...
متن کاملMinimum decoding trellis length and truncation depth of wrap-around Viterbi algorithm for TBCC in mobile WiMAX
The performance of the wrap-around Viterbi decoding algorithm with finite truncation depth and fixed decoding trellis length is investigated for tail-biting convolutional codes in the mobile WiMAX standard. Upper bounds on the error probabilities induced by finite truncation depth and the uncertainty of the initial state are derived for the AWGN channel. The truncation depth and the decoding tr...
متن کاملVariable-complexity trellis decoding of binary convolutional codes
We consider trellis decoding of convolutional codes with selectable effort, as measured by decoder complexity. Decoding is described for single parent codes with a variety of complexities, with performance “near” that of the optimal fixed receiver complexity coding system. Effective free distance is examined. Criteria are proposed for ranking parent codes, and some codes found to be best accord...
متن کاملSoft Decision Decoding of Fixed-rat Entropy-code Trellis Coded Quantization over a Noisy Channel
This paper presents new techniques to improve the performance of a Fixed-rate Entropy-coded Trellis Coded Quantizer (FE-TCQ) in transmission over a noisy channel. In this respect, we first present the optimal decoder for a Fixed-rate Entropy-coded Vector Quantizer (FEVQ). We show that the optimal decoder of the FEVQ can be a maximum likelihood decoder while a trellis structure is used to model ...
